Check your prescriptions before choosing

A practical starting point for understanding your choices. Check the official sources for details that apply to you.

Where drug coverage comes from

Medicare Part D drug coverage comes from private companies approved by Medicare. If you have Original Medicare, you can generally join a separate Medicare drug plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage as part of the plan. Confirm the exact plan you are considering, because the way drug coverage is included can differ.

If you already have prescription coverage through an employer or another source, check how it works with Medicare before changing it. In particular, ask whether that coverage is considered creditable and whether joining another plan would affect benefits you already have.

Check each medicine

Write down the name, strength, dosage, and how often you refill each prescription. Check the plan's drug list, called a formulary, to see whether each medicine is covered and on which cost tier. Drug lists can also have rules such as prior authorization, quantity limits, or step therapy.

Check your preferred pharmacies in the plan network and compare their prices, since what you pay can vary by pharmacy. If a medicine is not listed, ask the plan or your prescriber about covered alternatives or the exception process; do not change a prescription without speaking with your prescriber.

Estimate your total cost

A low monthly premium does not always mean the lowest total yearly cost. Compare the premium, any deductible, and what you may pay for each medicine throughout the year. Enter your actual prescriptions and preferred pharmacies into Medicare's plan comparison tool to get a more relevant estimate.

Review the plan's current formulary and pharmacy information before enrolling, and check again when the plan sends its annual change notice. Coverage and costs can change, so use the plan's current materials for the final decision.
